The Problem

Denying patients and visitors their Service Animals, even unintentionally, is an area of high risk for the healthcare organization. The organization’s legal staff needed a way to ensure that all staff members had an adequate understanding of laws and policies regarding Service Animals. All staff needed to understand how to appropriately respond to a variety of situations that often arise with Service Animals in healthcare facilities.

The Solution

An e-learning module was created that clearly and concisely outlines the law and policies regarding Service Animals in healthcare facilities. The module uses plain language to help all staff understand the main points of the laws and policies. The module includes three scenarios drawn from real experiences in the healthcare organization to help learners apply concepts and assess their learning. Detailed feedback is provided for incorrect and correct responses to help reinforce learning. Click the button at the left to view the module. The course menu can be used to jump to the scenarios.

Due to the high risk of liability related to this issue, all 17,000 employees of the healthcare organization are required to complete this module on an annual basis. The module is scheduled for update, including revised scenarios, once every three years.

Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop, Articulate Storyline

The Result

The module received high praise from the organization’s legal department, and since its release, there have been fewer patient and visitor complaints related to Service Animals.
