The Problem
Administrative Supervisors for the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) reported that nurses were making too many time documentation errors and omissions in patients’ electronic health records. These issues contributed to billing issues and miscommunication between PACU and hospital floor units. All PACU nurses are required to complete an e-learning module on documenting PACU events, however, learners reported that it was disorganized and hard to understand.
The Solution & Process
E-learning delivered through the health system’s learning management system was the preferred method of delivery for this learner population. The existing module was analyzed, and the decision was made to reorganize and present procedures using a sample patient case. As most PACU patient cases are similar, following a sample patient through the setting would provide context for the outlined procedures. This example would help learners better understand what actions they needed to take at different points in the patient’s PACU journey.
Working with subject matter experts (SMEs), a learning goal and accompanying objectives were determined. The original module was used as source material; the information it contained was utilized to develop a storyboard for a revised module. The storyboard was discussed with the SMEs to ensure that the procedures were still described correctly and flowed in the appropriate order. Once a draft of the module was complete, it was reviewed with the SMEs. Adjustments were made as necessary and requested before deployment. In addition to the module, a flow chart outlining the process and procedures was developed to place in PACU areas as a quick reference to supplement the training.
Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop, Articulate Storyline
The Result
Administrative Supervisors reported a decrease in the number of documentation errors, indicating more efficient and accurate surgical billing and improved PACU-to-floor communication.
